彼が一枚目のシングルを出した時は衝撃でした。
スティービーワンダーに声が似てるし、ファンキーでびっくりしたのを覚えています。

1990年、ジャミロクワイはロンドン出身で当時20歳のジェイ・ケイ（vo）が友人を集めて結成したバンドで、「Jamiroquai」 というバンド名は「Jam Session」 とアメリカ最古のインディアン、イロカイ族からとった 「Iroquai」 をかけ合わせたもの。シングル 「When You Gonna Learn ? 」 でアシッド・ジャズからデビュー。
ジャミロクワイはたった1枚のシングルで5000人収容のギグを超満員に膨れ上がらせるほどの成功を収める。
優れた時代感覚や独特のメッセージ、サウンドは大きな注目を浴び、デビュー直後にソニーと8枚のアルバム契約という異例の契約を結ぶ。
特にバンドのフロントマン、ジェイ・ケイはソングライティングやダンス、ファッションなど至るところでオリジナリティーあふれた才能を発揮し、そのあまりの存在感は 「ジェイ・ケイ＝ジャミロクワイ」 だと勘違いしてしまう人が大勢いるほどであった。
93年にリリースした1stアルバム 「Emergency On Planet Earth」 はUKチャートでNo.1を獲得。120万枚のセールスを記録した。同年には早くもクラブツアーのため、来日を果たしている。
94年にリリースされた2ndアルバム 「The Return Of The Space Cowboy」 もイギリスをはじめ、世界各国で高い評価を受けた。96年に発表した3rdアルバム 「Travelling Without Moving」 は、イギリス、アメリカはもちろん、日本でもミリオンヒット。
日本での売り上げは150万枚を記録し、全世界で700万枚を売り上げると言うスーパー・ヒットとなった。（日本のSONYのCMにジェイ・ケイが出演）
中でも名曲 「Virtual Insanity」 は世界中のサウンド・トラックとなり、MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDSやグラミー賞をはじめとするを数々の賞に輝く。
99年には4thアルバム 「Synkronized」 、1年の充電後の2001年には5枚目のアルバム 「A Funk Odessey」 をリリースした。バンドのロゴ 「バッファローマン（メディスンマン）」 はジェイ・ケイによって産み出されたジャミロクワイのシンボル。
